There are no specific rules to your spirituality. One thing I’ve noticed is that it is very easy to be caught up in the spiritual club where everyone is doing the same thing:
- vegan / raw foods / plant-based diet
- natural hair
- natural bath & body products
- natural cleaning products
- no makeup
- essential oils
- tarot cards
There seems to be a pattern in the way you are “supposed” to be if you claim to be spiritual & it is very easy to fall into the trap without noticing, but all you are doing is escaping one (religious/mental) prison to go to another (new age spiritual) prison.
The beauty of your spirituality is that it is unique to you. It is very easy with social media to get caught up & feel bad for not following the unspoken rules. No one says they are the rules directly but through the passive aggressive tweets & comments, the light shade thrown around & the mini-communities that grow, you start to see the pattern/trend of what is expected & accepted. The (unspoken) rules.
I can honestly say I have tried each of the spiritual club activities listed above (except learning tarot cards) at some point in my journey as I like to experiment & through all of my experimenting, at some points I did feel bad when I wasn’t following the “rules”. However, I would remind myself that there is no wrong or right to my spirituality & I would like to remind you of that too.
Through all of my various methods of experimentation, I found what I like, what I don’t like, what is important to me, what isn’t necessary for me & what spirituality is for me. I like the fact that I have tried different things, & I would encourage anyone to try things which they think may be beneficial to them, but don’t get discouraged or disheartened if it doesn’t work for you. It can be easy to feel like a “failure” in the social media new age spiritual community even more so when you are just starting out because you may feel like you need to do all of these things. You don’t.
Remember you are building a relationship with yourself & as you strength it, you will trust yourself & your own intuition even more to know what resonates & what doesn’t. You may realise you like the idea of something but it’s not vital or necessary for you to do it.
For example, I like the idea of living naturally and using natural cleaning products around my home which are less toxic etc, however, it isn’t practical for me & I love the smell of bold laundry detergent on my clothing & bedding. It isn’t necessary for me to use natural cleaning products. On the other hand, I love natural bath & body products and my skin is sensitive & reacts to most soaps & body washes etc after a few uses. Therefore it is important to me to use natural bath & body products so I do.
The beauty of being spiritual is following your own rules. You are the only person who truly knows you, so only you will know what works for you & what doesn’t. There is no one size fits all when it comes to spirituality & there isn’t one that is best. There is only what is best for you & that is unique.
If your spirituality isn’t a true reflection of you then I would say something is wrong. There is nothing wrong with using the tools other people use, just remember to check in with yourself every now & then and ask:
- why am I doing this?
- am I doing this because it is important to me?
- am I doing this because everyone else is doing it?
- am I seeing any results from this that benefit me on any level?
- is this truly necessary or do I simply like the idea of it?
Let me know if you have ever fallen into the “unspoken” rules of spirituality prison in the comment section below.
